USA Network is not known for its original shows. Shows on USA Network have complex plots that are better suited for short films, not multiple seasons of hour-long episodes. “Suits” is the exception to this rule. ”Suits” is the tale of relatively young, successful lawyer. Without a doubt, Suits is the best series on USA and one of the best series on television. What makes it that way is Aaron Korsh’s refusal to let the show’s sense of normalcy exist in a single state for too long.
It's not all men in suits. The show also boasts a strong female presence: Gina Torres plays the firm's senior partner, Jessica, as a no-nonsense badass who towers over everyone, and Sarah Rafferty steals scene after scene as Harvey's amusingly capable personal assistant, Donna. A sassy redhead with a flair for the dramatic, she's able to tell what kind of mood Harvey is in simply by looking at the colour of his shirt and the positioning of his tie. Still, the most entertaining turn belongs to Rick Hoffman as Louis Litt, the firm's ambitious junior partner, who starts off as an antagonistic supporting player, but before long has many of the best lines ("So what is this? A new cologne or just a hint of jealousy?"). Petty and tyrannical yet lovable (well, in his own way), Litt is one of the best characters on TV in recent years.
Suits has never been one to play by the rules. The series began experimenting with the idea of focusing all the attention on a single case rather than having the characters deal with individual crises per episode. Still, those changes in story structure never extended to the characters themselves. It all has to do with the dynamic of Harvey and Mike. Harvey and Mike always worked together to achieve the same goal, but disagreed about the ways in which to get there. The hierarchy between Mike and Harvey has never wavered, until now, and it’s going to make for some fascinating television in the coming weeks.
Nothing about Suits is ever consistent, and that’s what makes it exciting; something that not only do we have no idea what to expect from the story, we now have no idea what to expect from the characters. Viewers are, for the first time in a while, in completely uncharted territory for the New York based law series, and it’s a great feeling.
